Student Mock Interviews

Greater Beloit Economic Development Department

The Mock Interview Program began in 2009, a partnership of Beloit Memorial High School and the GBEDC Business/Education Partnership Committee.

A broad cross section of Beloit businesses, organizations and individual professionals volunteer their time and talents to make a direct contribution in assisting BMHS students.

Purpose

To teach students:

  • How to prepare a basic résumé and cover letter.
  • How to complete a job application.
  • What to wear and how to present yourself at a job interview.
  • What questions are commonly asked by employers at an interview, and how to answer them.
  • What questions should the interviewee ask the potential employer.
  • How and where to get a work permit, and why one is needed.

The Mock Interviews are conducted  on a recurring basis throughout the school year.

By the end of the year most Juniors will have had the opportunity to participate. It’s one more excellent example of how caring and directly involved Beloit’s local business community is in our student’s education.

GBEDC volunteers work with teachers and students in advance of the Mock Interviews in helping students to prepare. This includes preparing resumes and coaching students on how to conduct yourself on an job interview.

For Students

How does the Mock Interview Program Work?

Volunteer facilitators plan to meet with you TWO more times.

    1. Resumes & Cover Letter- You will prepare your resume and cover letter. You will also prepare for the interview with the help of the staff and volunteers.
    2. Interviews – You will complete a 15-minute “mock” interview with a local professional. You will have your application and resume ready, and be dressed professionally for that day (to be announced).

All participation and work is graded by your English teacher with information from the interviewer.

What will I be graded on in the interview?

    • Quality of Resume, Cover Letter, and Application
Review actual application, cover letter, and resume for completeness, neatness, organization, spelling, punctuation, level of detail and content, and attention to format.
    • Appearance
Hygiene & appropriateness of dress for a professional teen. No gum chewing, cell phones, or other distractions present.
    • Quality of Responses
Ability to stay focused, sophistication of answers, thoroughness, body language, and enthusiasm.
    • Greeting/Departure
Eye contact, facial expression, body positioning, handshake, energy.
    • Voice/Intonation
Was student audible? Talking in an engaging way? Too fast or too slow? Using the language appropriately for an interview?
    • Confidence
The student should express an appropriate level of confidence, but still show professional respect for the interviewer.

The Mock Interview Program is a partnership between the Greater Beloit Economic Development Corporation (GBEDC) Education Committee and Beloit Memorial High School English Department. Nearly 100 volunteer professionals from the community contribute to this educational initiative for our youth.
